“Bacteria, fungi, and algae play an essential role in almost all life processes and are key to understanding the planet. On closer inspection, however, they also raise questions about our concept of individuality, as they are connecting links, integral parts of our environment, and also part of our body. But what does it feel like to be a fungus with no eyes to see, or a bacterium in a human nostril?” (From the artist statement)
THROUGH OOZE & SLIME invites you to reconnect, to feel the world of fungi, bacteria, and algae from their perspective. Artist Maaijke Middelbeek has created reactive carriers, capsules, and devices that establish communication between species, in the format of a very lively, multi-sensory interactive installation.

The sound you hear is the fizzing and fizzling of photosynthesizing algae otherwise inaudible to the human ear, each sound an encounter between your breath and the chlorophyll-containing algae cells, the transformation of light into chemical energy and the crescendo of gas metamorphosis. Follow the instructions to make the algae sing.
