It’s All Ahead Of You
“The ink drawing It’s All Ahead Of You emerged intuitively during the process of its creation. It is an attempt to depict a thought process that arises while drawing. I work on a drawing for a long time, and it goes through different stages, I come up against blockages, then find solutions again – finding a good final version takes understanding and trust. I think about what is happening right now and what might happen in the future.” (Statement by the artist in November 2022 on her work, which has just begun.)
Linda Berger’s drawings are so fine, rich with colour, and make such a different impression from up close or from a distance that the jury found them to be particularly promising for presentation in Iran. For her part, Berger was interested in the country’s carpet traditions and the patterns and colour schemes that have been passed down for generations, hoping to draw from these for her new work. Unfortunately, the current political situation in Iran curtailed these plans, and the project was cancelled due to security concerns. Despite these developments, Berger has created this piece for the project.
Vanessa Bersis wrote an essay as part of Berger’s work, showing the background, creative process, and artistic execution of the work. “This mass of strokes, their principle of order, explosive presence, connection, the resulting fullness, energy, and power, the electrifying vibrancy overcome one when looking at It’s All Ahead Of You. In the end, the very first stroke can no longer be found in the dense mass, yet its existence fuels a sense of confidence and trust that the work process has succeeded from the very start.
