Jappy Julia’s Crappy Cookbook: If you can’t say it with words, say it with chicken

“A few years ago, we watched American celebrity chef Ina Garten explain that after she published her now famous recipe for roast chicken, she was overwhelmed with reactions from readers: People who cooked the dish for their partners were immediately extended a marriage proposal. The unofficial ‘engagement chicken’ was born. We became fascinated with the idea of how food, and chicken in particular, can communicate feelings that are often hard to put into words.” (From the artists’ statement)

Gabriele Edlbauer is from Upper Austria. Julia S. Goodman was born in New York into a Jewish family with roots in a region that is now Poland and Ukraine. Some of the chicken recipes handed down through her family also come from there, and the trip to Krakow thus also became about her personal family history, giving the two artists a great deal to discuss well beyond chicken dishes.

“And so, our intention is to create an artistic rendering of a cookbook featuring chicken recipes that relay specific emotional messages. These emotions are not conveyed by the recipe, but also by other artistic aspects such as plating, tables, seating, and lighting. Our sculptural and painterly expertise is used to frame and enhance the dishes.” (From the artists’ statement)
