SO FAR THIS FAR — SOFA(R) ON THE WAY
A participatory project in public space, held during the Mahalla Festival in Kurtuluş, Istanbul, 1–10 Sept. 2022
SO FAR THIS FAR — SOFA(R) ON THE WAY is a mobile assemblage on wheels. Some of the materials were found on the street, some dug out of local garbage collection points, and some were donations from the neighbourhood. The work was a performative intervention in the public space of Istanbul. The project played with the topic of ecological awareness, placing a focus on the value and recyclability of our everyday objects and putting garbage at the playful and poetic centre of artistic exploration. The street in front of the former Greek school was transformed into a public workshop. The neighbourhood was invited to actively participate in the design processes in daily participatory work sessions. The project culminated in a procession of the mobile sculptures created during these sessions, pushed, pulled, and accompanied by local residents and an interested art audience. The lively constellation in the neighbourhood streets was musically accompanied by Fungistanbul, a band known for making their own instruments out of waste materials.
