... on Swimming in the River

In collaboration with the Ulrike Hrobsky

Gallery, Vienna

Bratislava and Vienna are very close in many ways, including historically and geographically. Another very special connection is the cultural and ecological area of the Danube. Persevering through shipping traffic and the cold, artist Martina Tscherni swam the entire distance between the two cities, accompanied only by a canoe carrying a camera and a sound recording device.

Tscherni’s work combines artistic forms of expression and themes in direct and complex ways. “Similar to drawing, when I am in the water I am also acting within an isolated space. Consciously or not, there is a connection between the emergence of the form on paper, the water (performatively), and myself. […] Drawing is my passion. I decline shapes, transforming and redesigning them by shifting the dimensions or using details to create a range of variations.

The transformation occurs spontaneously as I transfer it to paper, drawing ‘one by one’. The ongoing, seemingly monotonous repetition of similar structures gives me a sense of security. The meticulously executed structures are overlaid with real images taken while swimming in the waters of the Danube. The personal, imaginary images that come to me (or not) during the long swim take me out of familiar structures and into unsafe waters.” (From the artist statement)
