Phase I – The Gate of the Notgalerie as a Sculpture Garden
On 16 November 2022, the garden of the Arad Contemporary Art Center (ACAC) became the site of a new Notgalerie (transl. emergency gallery) project by Viennese artist Reinhold Zisser. Arad is located in Israel in the Negev desert. In Phase I, the artist created an installation using the archway of the Notgalerie, which had been transported to Israel. Some elements were grouped into seating that interacts with the other parts, which seek to merge with the garden as sculptural figures.
The first formation created a dialogue at the Arad location that enabled the establishment and operation of the Notgalerie in Israel. This communication was used to begin the search for a location in the desert where the gate will be reassembled in its original form in 2023 in Phase II. This gate, like the Notgalerie itself, will then be both a sculptural installation and a display that invites other artists to create a community – a social sculpture. Zisser presents an installation reflecting on the location of the garden at the Künstlerhaus.
